Samuel Hewes House
Nicholas Newlin House
853 Concord Road

“The children on farms in our neighborhood lived too far apart to gather in gangs and play pranks on Halloween, as they do in cities and towns. Consequently, a family group usually celebrated the occasion by going on a “hay ride”, particularly if it was a clear, moonlight night … We dressed up in crazy costumes, grown people as well as children, and, with horns, whistles, and tin pans, we made a hilarious noise as we drove around the neighborhood” (Hannum, p. 56-57).
The Nicholas Newlin House was built in 1742 with a back addition in 1800. It was also reportedly used as a hospital during the Battle of the Brandywine in September 1777. One of the rooms inside the home is rumored to have blood-soaked floorboards from the Battle. Samuel Hewes purchased the property in the 1820s. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Today, the home is divided into two separate apartments facing the current Concordville Fire Station.
