Our Meadow + Woods

“Several days were spent each fall by family groups of us gathering shellbarks under many trees in the woodland plot, ‘The Woods,’ at the back of the meadow on the Pinewood Farm… Then climbing through the barway we made the long trek through the deep carpet of meadow grass to ‘The Woods’” (Hannum, p. 54).
Many trees still exist in Hannum’s “The Woods.” These trees separate the border between Garnet Valley High School and the neighboring housing development “Cambridge Downs.” The once Virgin Meadow is now developed with a cluster of houses bounded by Conchester Highway, Merion Drive, and Marlborough Lane.
