The most wonderful experience I remember of my good times when I visited Harry at his home was the fun we had playing in and around Uncle Charlie’s mills. He operated two mills that stood side by side on the bank of Green Creek, on the road from Chelsea to Chester Heights, at the bottom of the high hill on top of which the house was located, a flour and grist mill and a saw mill. A cider mill was installed on the ground level of the saw mill” (Hannum, p.87).

The Peters Saw and Grist Mills existed on the west branch of Chester Creek near the Concord Township line. William Peters owned 300 acres in Aston in 1740 and is listed as owning a saw mill in 1767. William Peters’ grandson, William Peters Jr., purchased the property in 1783 and owned a grist and saw mill by 1805. A 3 story stone grist mill was built in 1844. The mill was sold to Charles Johnson, an uncle of Joshua Eyre Hannum, in 1872 and was kept in the Johnson family until 1903.

Today, the saw mill is undergoing extensive renovations. It appears that the building has been used as an apartment building in recent years.
