“Aunt Lil was a teacher in Sunday School, Aunt Bess, who usually accompanied us, played the organ, not only for the hymns we sung during Sunday School service, but also for the Morning Service which followed. The Rector, the Reverend Joshua Copeland gave a short talk each Sunday to the boys in girls in Sunday School. I remember him as a kindly man with white hair and a well-trimmed white beard” (Hannum, p. 59).

St. John’s Episcopal Church was founded in 1702 on land donated by John Hannum. Early church services were held in Hannum’s home along Concord Road. The first church building was a small log building, which later had various additions completed through the years. The current building was erected in 1844 and stands extant today with an active congregation.
